New Year’s Resolutions For Better Prostate Health

New Year’s Resolutions For Better Prostate Health

The New Year is a perfect time for a clean start. Even if you don’t make formal resolutions, you could still take advantage of the new year to make some positive changes in your life. This year however, why not get a little more specific in ways that delve beyond simply trying to drink less or exercise more? This year, why not resolve to get healthier by developing a plan for keeping your prostate healthy and prevent diseases such as prostate cancer. The best part is that there are a number ways to keep your prostate healthy, especially if you buckle down and get proactive about it. So let’s take a look at some of the things you can do towards having a healthy prostate in 2017.

Talk With Your Doctor

Sometimes improving your health is as simple as taking a trip to see your doctor. As you age, the likelihood of being diagnosed with prostate cancer increases significantly. Men over 40 should begin discussing their prostate health with a physician. Catching prostate cancer in its earliest stages can greatly improve a man’s chance at survival and with early treatment, the five year survival rate is more than 90% – among the highest of all types of cancers. So it’s important to be proactive and talk to your doctor about your prostate health.

Do Kegel Exercises

Many people wrongly assume that Kegels are strictly for women, but men can benefit as well. The exercise, which involves strongly contracting the pelvic muscles used to hold back urine, reinforces those muscles and can tighten and strengthen the pelvic floor. Kegels may be prescribed for both men and women with incontinence and for women with pelvic floor prolapse.

Learn How To Perform A Self Examination

A scrotal mass is basically a lump that can be felt developing under the skin that may indicate inflammation, an enlarged vein, or a cancerous or noncancerous growth. Scrotal masses are relatively easy to catch during a self-examination, which is recommended on a monthly basis. Self-examinations are one of the best measures for early detection, and early detection means better chances of recovery.

Drink More Water

One of the best preventative measures against kidney stones and urinary tract infections is simply drinking water. Medical evidence suggests that drinking too few fluids can exacerbate a chemical oversaturation of the urine, causing stones to form. Further, increased water will dilute the urinary stream and enable the body to flush bacteria before an infection can begin.

Improve Your Diet

A change in diet should be on everyone’s new year’s resolution check list. Tailoring your diet to also help with your prostate health is a smart decision. There are certain foods that you can eat that will help decrease your chances of developing prostate cancer. Tomatoes for example are a good place to start. They contain lycopene, which studies have shown to decrease a man’s chances of developing prostate cancer. There are a number of other foods to consider so be sure to talk with your doctor about the kinds of foods that are beneficial to your prostate health.

Make the commitment towards improving your prostate health and keep yourself motivated so that you stay on track. Don’t allow another year to go by without investing time towards making changes that won’t only improve your prostate health but will also help to improve the overall quality of your life. Happy New Years!!!
