Is HIFU a Safe Prostate Cancer Treatment Option? – Dr. David Samadi

The prostate gland is located between the bladder & urethra. The prostate helps make semen, which carries sperm from the testicles when a man ejaculates.

In the United States, Prostate cancer affects 230,000 men each year with approximately 30,000 fatalities. Dr. David Samadi states that an MRI fusion biopsy is the best method of prostate cancer detection.

Today, most patients opt for removal of the prostate by prostate surgery. Dr. David Samadi states that removal of the prostate gives extremely accurate staging. In the hands of an experienced surgeon sexual function & continence will not be effected.

A new treatment option available for patients is HIFU.

According to Dr. David Samadi HIFU (High Intensity Focused Ultrasound) is a treatment option that can be considered for selected low risk prostate cancer patients (Gleason 6) with a small prostate. Patients will be under general anesthesia and a transducer in the rectum is used to generate high focused ultrasound energy to burn the cancer cells.

Patients considering HIFU as a treatment option should consider the following.

• Stage of prostate cancer (low, moderate or aggressive)
• How many cores of the prostate is effected by cancer

HIFU should not be offered to patients with advanced cancer as there’s a recurrence rate of 28%. There’s also a risk of infection, urinary problems & other adverse side effects.
