Epididymitis: Risk Factors, Prevention And Home Remedies

Epididymitis: Risk Factors, Prevention And Home Remedies

The epididymis is a coiled tube that connects the testicle with the vas deferens and is responsible for carrying and storing sperm. Inflammation of the epididymis causes epididymitis, a painful condition that can be caused by a number of different factors. Epididymitis is most commonly caused by bacterial infections or sexually transmitted infections. Sexually transmitted infections that have been known to cause inflammation of the epididymis include gonorrhea and chlamydia. Apart from sexually transmitted infections, other types of bacterial infections may also result in epididymitis. Chief among them are urinary and prostate infections. The bacteria from these sites may spread to the testicles, resulting in epididymitis.

Risk Factors

Risk factors for developing epididymitis include:

  • Unprotected sex or having sex with a partner who has a history of sexually transmitted infections
  • Having a history of infections to the urinary tract or the prostate
  • Having a history of surgical procedures to the urinary tract with insertion of catheters and other medical instruments
  • An individual with an uncircumcised penis has a high risk of developing Epididymitis
  • If an individual has prostate enlargement then it predisposes that individual to Epididymitis.

Prevention

In younger men, the cause of epididymitis is usually because of a sexually related disease. If one partner is infected, the other partner should be evaluated and potentially treated as well. Otherwise, the patient may become reinfected. Other prevention methods are as follows:

  • abstinence (no sexual relations);
  • condom use (reduces chances for infection by about 90%);
  • monogamy with only one uninfected sex partner;

For older men, maintaining good hygiene is suggested for those who are uncircumcised to help prevent urethral and bladder infections. In addition, reducing the use of urinary catheterization, or ensuring proper methods, may also help prevent inflammation and infection. Appropriate medical care can help reduce the risk for infection in men with compromised immunity.

Home Remedies

While there are a few natural remedies that you can try to help relieve the symptoms of epididymitis, it is better to consult your doctor before trying any of them. Here are some home remedies for epididymitis that can help to bring you some relief:

  • Bed Rest: Staying in bed for a few days will bring you some relief from the discomfort you are experiencing.
  • Elevate your Scrotum: Keep a folded towel under your scrotum to act as a support.
  • Athletic Supporters: Wearing an athletic supporter will provide you with some relief.
  • Ice packs: Applying ice packs to your scrotum will also help to reduce the swelling and provide you with relief.
  • Avoid Sex: This will allow your testicles to heal faster and also prevent your partner from getting infected.

Again remember to consult your doctor before trying any of these remedies at home. Your doctor will be the best person to advise you on their use and efficacy.
